Ninh Binh

When you're traveling with little ones, knowing where to find supermarket before you need it makes a big difference. Here's Ninh Binh.

Ninh Binh is a small city and grocery shopping is different from what you'd find in Hanoi or Da Nang. There's no big international-style supermarket. Your main options are the local Vinmart+ convenience stores, the wet market near the city center, and small grocery shops scattered along Tran Hung Dao street.

Cost

Prices are low, even by Vietnamese standards. Fresh fruit from the market costs almost nothing. Packaged snacks, water, and basics at Vinmart+ are priced the same as everywhere else in Vietnam. Diapers and baby supplies are available but the range is limited to one or two brands.

Practical tips

Stock up on essentials in Hanoi before heading to Ninh Binh if you have specific needs. The Vinmart+ stores in town carry diapers, wipes, basic medications, snacks, and drinks. For fresh food, the market is great but it's a traditional Vietnamese wet market so manage expectations if you've only shopped at supermarkets before. If you're staying in Tam Coc (the main tourist area, about 7km from Ninh Binh city), there are a few small shops but selection is very limited. We learned to keep a backup supply of diapers and snacks for the kids because running out in Tam Coc at night means a ride into town.

Language

Very little English. Point and pick. Prices are usually displayed or you can use a calculator app to negotiate at the market. Vinmart+ has fixed prices with tags.

Traveling with three little kids means you learn these things fast.
