Strasbourg
Strasbourg is a great place to visit, until you need hospital. Here's how to make that part easier.
Practical Info
Strasbourg sits right on the French-German border and benefits from both healthcare traditions. The main hospital is the Hopitaux Universitaires de Strasbourg (HUS), a large teaching hospital with a full emergency department. Being a border city, many medical staff speak both French and German, and English is reasonably common too.
Cost
Public hospital ER visits follow standard French pricing. The initial consultation is around 30 EUR, with additional costs for tests and treatment. Being on the border, if you have a European Health Insurance Card it's accepted here. Keep all paperwork for insurance claims.
Practical tips
The Hautepierre hospital campus handles most emergencies and has a dedicated pediatric emergency department. It's on the west side of the city, reachable by tram (line A or E). For non-emergencies, SOS Medecins Strasbourg (03 88 75 75 75) does house calls. If you're visiting during the Christmas market season and need care, expect the ER to be busier than usual.
Language
This is one of the easier French cities for English-speaking travelers needing medical care. The bilingual French-German environment means staff are used to communicating across languages. Many doctors also speak English.
With kids
The Hautepierre campus has a pediatric emergency unit separate from the adult ER. Wait times vary but the care is excellent. The children's hospital ward is well-equipped and used to dealing with anxious parents.
travel-ER was built for the moment you actually need it. It finds the closest care to wherever you are, instantly.
