Bali
Bali is a great place to visit, until you need hospital. Here's how to make that part easier.
What to Know
Bali's medical facilities are concentrated in the southern part of the island around Kuta, Denpasar, and Nusa Dua. BIMC Hospital has two locations, one in Kuta and one in Nusa Dua, and is the most well-known international hospital on the island. Siloam Hospital in Denpasar is a large, well-equipped facility. Kasih Ibu Hospital is another solid option in Denpasar. If you're in Ubud, Canggu, or anywhere in the north, getting to a proper hospital means driving south, which can take an hour or more depending on traffic.
Cost
BIMC is the most expensive option, with ER visits starting at around 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 IDR (125 to 315 USD). Siloam and Kasih Ibu are cheaper, typically 500,000 to 2,000,000 IDR for a consultation and basic treatment. BIMC can bill some international insurance providers directly. At Siloam and Kasih Ibu, expect to pay upfront and claim later.
Practical tips
BIMC Kuta is the default for most tourists and expats. It's on Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai and easy to reach from the airport area, Seminyak, and Legian. For anything serious, BIMC and Siloam are both capable, but for truly complex cases like major trauma or specialist surgery, evacuation to Singapore or Jakarta is the standard protocol. If you're in Canggu, the drive to BIMC Kuta takes about 40 minutes in normal traffic. In Ubud, it's about an hour. Some villas and hotels have on-call doctors who can come to you for minor issues, which saves the trip south.
Language
English is standard at BIMC. Siloam and Kasih Ibu have English-speaking doctors, especially the ones who've trained internationally. At smaller clinics and the public hospital (RSUP Sanglah), English is limited.
With kids
BIMC has a pediatric service and is used to treating children with travel-related illnesses like gastro, ear infections, and tropical fevers. We took one of our kids there for a nasty bout of gastroenteritis and the pediatrician was thorough and reassuring. The facility is clean and modern.
