Chiang Rai
You're in Chiang Rai and you need hospital. Finding what you need in a foreign city isn't always easy. Here's a head start.
Chiang Rai is smaller than Chiang Mai and the hospital options reflect that. Overbrook Hospital is the main private hospital that foreign visitors use. Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital is the public option with a proper ER. For serious emergencies, you may need to transfer to Chiang Mai, which is about three hours by road.
Overbrook Hospital charges around 1,000 to 2,500 THB (28 to 70 USD) for a basic visit. The public hospital is cheaper but waits are longer. Credit cards are accepted at Overbrook.
If you're visiting the White Temple area or staying in the city center, Overbrook is the most accessible option. Keep in mind that Chiang Rai doesn't have the same level of specialist care as Bangkok or Chiang Mai. For anything beyond basic treatment, plan on getting to Chiang Mai.
English is spoken at Overbrook, though not as fluently as at hospitals in Bangkok. At the public hospital, English is limited. Having a translation app ready helps.
Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital has a pediatric ward. Overbrook Hospital also treats children and tends to have shorter waits. For something non-urgent, the clinics around the city center can handle basic pediatric cases like fevers and ear infections.
