El Calafate
We've been to El Calafate with our kids. Here's what we learned about finding diapers there.
The Basics
El Calafate is a small tourist town of about 25,000 people, built around glacier tourism. It's not the middle of nowhere, but it's not a big city either. You can find diapers here, just don't expect a huge selection.
A pack of Huggies or Pampers runs around 4,000 to 7,000 ARS depending on the size and count. That's noticeably more than Buenos Aires prices. The local brand Babysec is cheaper and works fine for day use. Wipes are available but cost about double what you'd pay in a city.
La Anonima supermarket on Avenida Libertador is your best bet. It's the biggest store in town and usually has two or three diaper brands in stock across most sizes. There's also a Carrefour Express that carries basics. The small shops along Libertador have diapers too but at higher prices and with fewer size options. If you're headed to El Chalten or spending multiple days at the glacier, buy everything you need here first because options get worse the further you go. We found that checking La Anonima right after a delivery day (usually Tuesday or Thursday) gave us the best selection.
Beyond diapers, La Anonima stocks baby wipes, rash cream, children's sunscreen, and a small range of baby food jars. Formula is available in one or two brands. For anything specific, bring it from Buenos Aires or order ahead if your accommodation can receive packages.
We had to figure this out ourselves in El Calafate. Sharing so you don't have to.
Hopefully this stays bookmarked and unused. But if you're in El Calafate and something comes up, travel-er.app is there.
