Looking for hospital in Milan? Here's what you should know before you need one.
Milan has some of Italy's best hospitals. For emergencies, call 118. Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico is the main teaching hospital, centrally located near the Duomo area. Ospedale Niguarda in the north of the city is another major facility with a full emergency department.
Cost
Emergency care at public hospitals follows the Italian system: urgent cases (red and yellow triage codes) are free for everyone. Green and white codes incur a ticket (co-pay) of around 25 EUR. Private hospitals like Humanitas or Ospedale San Raffaele cost significantly more but offer shorter waits and more English.
Practical tips
For non-emergencies, Milan has Guardia Medica (out-of-hours doctor service) available evenings and weekends. Call 02 34567 for the Milan service. Ospedale San Raffaele in the east of the city is a leading private-public hospital with excellent facilities and more international orientation. If you need care and have travel insurance, calling your insurer first can help direct you to an appropriate facility.
Language
Milan is more international than most Italian cities. At major hospitals like Policlinico and San Raffaele, many doctors speak English. Administrative staff are less likely to. At Humanitas, which treats many international patients, English is more readily available.
With kids
Ospedale dei Bambini Vittore Buzzi is Milan's children's hospital, located in the western part of the city. It has a pediatric emergency department. Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico also has a pediatric ER section.
